How Many Portable Restrooms Do You Need?

Answer a few quick questions and get an instant recommendation built on industry sizing standards. No guessing, no overpaying.

This estimate follows OSHA Standard 1926.51(c)(1): one toilet for crews up to 20 workers, then one toilet and one urinal per 40 workers, easing to one per 50 workers above 200. A standard restroom provides both a toilet seat and a urinal.
3UNITS

How we calculate this

Events. Event estimates follow the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) sizing standard, which sets the number of units by guest count and how many hours the event runs. When alcohol is served we add about 15 percent, in line with the PSAI guidance of 10 to 20 percent more units, since guests use restrooms more often.

Construction. Job site estimates follow OSHA Standard 1926.51(c)(1): one toilet for up to 20 workers, then one toilet and one urinal per 40 workers, easing to one per 50 workers above 200. Each standard restroom provides both a toilet seat and a urinal. This is the legal minimum, and many sites add units for cleanliness between weekly services.

Accessibility. For events we always include at least one ADA wheelchair accessible unit, scaling up about one per 20 units for larger crowds.

Hand wash stations. We suggest hand wash stations alongside your restrooms, with more recommended when food is served.

This estimate is a planning guide based on the PSAI event standard and OSHA 1926.51 for construction. Final counts can vary with peak timing, site layout, weather, and local code. Mesa Waste Services will confirm the right setup with your free quote.

The calculator above gives you a fast estimate. The numbers behind it come from two recognized standards: the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) guideline for events and OSHA Standard 1926.51(c)(1) for construction sites. Here is how those standards work, plus answers to the questions we hear most.

Why trust these numbers? Mesa Waste Services rents portable restrooms, restroom trailers, and hand wash stations across Mesa and the East Valley. We size every job to published industry standards, not guesswork, so you book enough units without paying for extras you will not use. If your event or site has unusual timing or layout, we adjust the plan with you before delivery.

Porta potty rental FAQs

How many porta potties do I need for a wedding?

+

A typical wedding of 100 to 150 guests running 4 to 6 hours needs about 2 to 4 standard restrooms. Many couples upgrade to a restroom trailer for a nicer experience. Add 10 to 20 percent more if you are serving alcohol, and always include at least one ADA accessible unit.

How many porta potties do I need for a party or backyard event?

+

A small gathering of 50 guests or fewer usually needs just 1 to 2 units for an event of up to four hours. Use the calculator above to get a count for your exact headcount and length.

How many porta potties per person should I plan for?

+

A common starting point from the PSAI standard is one restroom for every 50 to 75 guests at an event of up to four hours. Longer events, hot weather, and alcohol all increase how often people go, so the count rises from there.

How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?

+

OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) requires one toilet for up to 20 workers, then one toilet and one urinal per 40 workers, easing to one per 50 workers above 200. So a 40 person crew needs 1 unit and an 80 person crew needs 2. See our construction porta potty rentals for details.

How many hand washing stations do I need?

+

Plan on one hand wash station for every two to four restrooms, and more when food is served. On job sites, hand washing facilities are also part of staying OSHA compliant.

Do I need an ADA accessible portable restroom?

+

Events open to the public should include at least one ADA wheelchair accessible restroom. For larger events, plan on roughly one accessible unit for every 20 standard units.

Does serving alcohol change how many I need?

+

Yes. Guests use restrooms more often when drinking, so the PSAI standard recommends adding 10 to 20 percent more units when alcohol is served. The calculator above applies this for you when you select yes.

How often are the units cleaned and serviced?

+

Standard units are typically serviced once a week, with more frequent service for high traffic events or large crews. We set a cleaning schedule that matches your booking so the units stay fresh.

What areas does Mesa Waste Services cover?

+

We serve Mesa and the East Valley, including Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, and San Tan Valley, with rentals available across Arizona and nationwide.
